With over 3 million downloads to its name, Backbreaker has become an App Store phenomenon as one of the best-selling sports titles for iPhone – and a showcase for the power of smartphone technology.
NaturalMotion wanted to create a mobile game that recreated the cutting-edge animation and graphics of its console franchise. Marmalade was an obvious choice, allowing NaturalMotion to deliver console-quality visuals, stay within an industry-standard C++ development environment, and deploy content not only to iOS and Android but also to other emerging platforms.
As part of the process, NaturalMotion joined the Marmalade Partners Program, and made its ‘morpheme’ advanced animation technology available for Marmalade. Any Marmalade app can now use this technology to provide stunningly realistic character animation.
When the first Android tablets were launched, the Android Market app store was keen to showcase the highest-quality tablet games on the planet. Backbreaker was at the top of its list, and the game was treated to a graphical overhaul. Marmalade’s full support for OpenGL ES 2.0 allowed effects such as render-to-texture – for the stadium Jumbotron screens – and full character self-shadowing.
Taking part in the Marmalade Apps Program has helped NaturalMotion Games receive additional revenue advances and royalties by having Backbreaker delivered to Samsung Apps (bada) and Ovi Store (Symbian).
Torsten Reil, Chief Executive Officer of NaturalMotion Games, says: "Our goal was to build a game with high-end graphics for highly addictive, casual game play. Marmalade has delivered on all fronts."
